The most experienced figure in the Darlington Football Club Rescue Group has stressed that the community effort to back the club must continue.

Steve Weeks, former chairman of Quakers, has been a supporter of the club for decades.

And, after the Uncovered fans website last night revealed details of a plan by venture capitalist Paul Wildes to save the club and take it out of administration, Weeks told the Gazette: “The club has never before seen such a coming together of the community that we have now.

“The club has been in administration before but what we are witnessing now, with so many people rallying round, is very special.

“Everybody wants to help, from businesses, fans and schoolchildren. The youngsters are raising a lot of money, and awareness.

“And it is vital that this all-round effort continues. This has to be just the beginning if we are to have a vibrant club with the town and area fully involved.”
